You need to get them separated so the middle will thaw faster.. I suggest not only setting them in water but to run luke warm(not hot) water over them, every few minutes break them apart as much as possible. You have to stay right there and work with them to get them apart! I've had to do that before myself. Microwave defrosting will make it tough and chewy! I only do burger in the microwave and only a few minutes at a time at that!
