Why were the police officers and the majority of students in Virginia Tech so obese?

Does Virginia have a obesity epidemic? I watched the shooting unfold and as the images came through my tv I could only see obese Americans all over the place, obese cops helping students, gluttonous students looking on etc.. Why is America so full of gluttons?
