Why is my London accent at its coarsest whenever I'm AWAY from London?

Don't get me wrong- I love this fact, but it just doesn't make an ounce of bloody sense! Could this just be some sort of subconscious defence mechanism 'cos I'm away from me birth place or is there another reason for it? I don't get it at all! :/
