Why has cricket been slow to embrace club phenomenon?

Many people whinge about how club cricket will lessen the importance of international cricket. But is it really that bad? When people are starting to get interested in sports like football or basketball, they choose a club team to support, and helps them get involved into following the game. That has never been the case in cricket, which is why it has not found a global audience. I think IPL and ICL can help alleviate that drawback. You think?
